AI Service Desk by Company Size
Enterprise, Mid-Market, SMB: An Honest Routing Guide for 2026
Why Company Size Matters for AI ITSM
Every AI ITSM vendor claims their platform works for "any size organisation." This is not honest. The category is not tier-neutral. Enterprise platforms (ServiceNow, Moveworks) have per-seat economics that rarely close below 5,000 employees. Mid-market platforms (Freshservice, Atlassian JSM) hit scale ceilings in multi-region governance and compliance above 10,000 seats. Newer entrants optimised for SMB struggle with the integration depth requirements of enterprise multi-system environments.
The honest routing: below 1,000 employees, enterprise platforms are overkill and expensive per-seat. Between 1,000 and 10,000, the mid-market platforms deliver the best time-to-value and per-seat economics. Above 10,000, the governance, compliance, and multi-region requirements push toward enterprise platforms. These are generalisations; specific circumstances (existing platform investment, industry compliance requirements, budget flexibility) always override them.
Enterprise Tier (10,000+ Employees)
Key enterprise decision factors
- +Compliance coverage: SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, ISO 27001, FedRAMP (for public sector)
- +Multi-region data residency: EU, APAC, and North America separate data environments
- +On-premises and air-gapped options: some regulated industries cannot use cloud-only
- +Advanced audit logging: every AI action must be logged for compliance review
- +Integration depth: 50+ enterprise system integrations, custom CMDB, monitoring tools
- +Enterprise support SLA: 24/7, dedicated CSM, onsite professional services
For organisations already running ServiceNow Pro Plus or Enterprise, the decision is functionally between Now Assist (with Moveworks capabilities integrating through 2026-2027) and a parallel Aisera evaluation to maintain optionality. For organisations on Jira Service Management or other non-ServiceNow ITSM platforms, Aisera is the strongest enterprise-grade independent option. Below 10,000 seats, the ServiceNow platform economics rarely close without an existing investment to leverage.
Mid-Market Tier (1,000-10,000 Employees)
Key mid-market decision factors
- +Time-to-value: weeks, not months; mid-market IT teams cannot sustain 6-month implementations
- +Per-seat economics: transparent, predictable pricing that doesn't require custom negotiation
- +Existing ITSM fit: AI layer should build on the ITSM platform already running, not require migration
- +Integration coverage: Okta/Entra ID, Slack/Teams, Confluence/SharePoint at minimum
- +Vendor support tier: mid-market typically gets standard support, not enterprise white-glove
Jira shops should start with Atlassian JSM Premium and Atlassian Intelligence before evaluating external AI overlays. Freshservice shops should evaluate Freddy AI Agent on Enterprise. Non-Jira, non-Freshservice shops with complex multi-system automation needs should evaluate Aisera as the leading option that does not require ServiceNow.
SMB / Lean IT Tier (Under 1,000 Employees)
Key SMB decision factors
- +Total cost: vendor-managed AI where setup is minimal, no custom integration required
- +Deployment speed: lean IT teams need weeks, not months; internal bandwidth is the constraint
- +Self-service configuration: platforms that require professional services for setup are impractical
- +Support tier: responsive standard support; 24/7 enterprise SLA is typically not critical at this size
